When we think of travel, we often think of the perfect scenario.  Luxury accommodations, completely perfect weather, excursions and experiences we can’t have at home.  While those are things to look forward to, the reality is many of us don’t know how to plan for travel.

First things first, if you don’t plan, it won’t happen.  It’s as simple as that.  You’ll end up with many wishes and few realities.  Increasing costs of living and emergency expenses can take their toll on our vacation dreams.

Jonathan gives us some perspective on why and when you should be budgeting for travel.  Well, that depends on what kinds of travel.  That’s right.  There’s more to it than “vacation dreams.”  We need to think of travel as part of our yearly expenses broken down into monthly budgeting.

When we were younger (and mostly broke), there were many times we simply didn’t have a way to pay for travel expenses, and so we simply didn’t go.  Now, that might be just part of the breaks for just starting out, but what about business, school, emergency, or family travel?  It doesn’t seem right to always have to bypass those plans.  And…you don’t.  Once we learned about keeping track of our expenses AND planning for them, doors opened up gradually and sensibly.

Both Jonathan and I share our mistakes, our takeaways, and offer some insight into realistic goal setting and not breaking the bank when it comes to travel expenses.
